The Reminiscences of an Irish Land Agent

Samuel Murray Hussey was arguably the most hated man in 19th-century Ireland. As a land agent between British landlords and desperate tenant farmers during the Great Famine, he occupied a position of immense power and profound vulnerability. He survived multiple attempts on his life and received scores of threatening letters. Yet here he is at eighty years old, finally persuaded to set down his recollections. What emerges is an extraordinarily candid memoir from a man who witnessed the catastrophe firsthand and lived to tell of it. Hussey writes with the blunt authority of someone who has nothing left to lose, offering unsparing glimpses into the machinery of landlordism, the anguish of a starving countryside, and the complex politics of survival. This is not sanitized history from a later age; it is the voice of a man who was there, who made impossible decisions, and who somehow lived long enough to reflect on it all with hard-won honesty.
