The Regular Brigade of the Fourteenth Army Corps, the Army of the Cumberland, in the Battle of Stone River, or Murfreesboro', Tennessee
1883
Frederick Phisterer's 1883 account offers an invaluable tactical dissection of one of the Civil War's bloodiest engagements. The Battle of Stone River (December 31, 1862 , January 3, 1863) saw the Regular Brigade of the Fourteenth Army Corps, soldiers of the professional U.S. Army, not volunteers, thrust into some of the conflict's most brutal fighting outside Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Phisterer, drawing on official records and command testimony, reconstructs the brigade's movements, positioning, and desperate exchanges with Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg. The narrative chronicles Lieutenant-Colonel O. L. Shepherd's unit as it endured devastating casualties, holding critical ground amid the battle's shifting fortunes. Beyond mere chronology, the work preserves the granular details that military historians prize: troop dispositions, artillery coordination, casualty figures, and the perspectives of officers who led men through the smoke and chaos. This is not a narrative of heroes and romance but a professional soldier's careful accounting of how regiments fought, where they broke, and what they lost. For serious students of the Civil War, especially those focused on the Army of the Cumberland or the mechanics of brigade-level combat, Phisterer's monograph remains an essential primary source.
