The Red Watch": With the First Canadian Division in Flanders

A visceral, first-hand account of the 48th Highlanders of Canada , the 'Red Watch' , fighting in the mud and carnage of Flemish trenches during the Great War. John Allister Currie, who served as a company commander, writes with the urgent clarity of a man who lived through it: the ceaseless artillery, the cold that seeped into bones, the extraordinary bonds formed between men facing death together daily. He traces the regiment's lineage from the first Highland soldiers who arrived in Halifax in 1757 through to the mobilized battalions of 1914, giving context to the kilted soldiers who went 'over the top' into no man's land. This is not a distant military history but a memoir rooted in specific moments, specific men, specific losses. It endures because it captures what many histories miss: the texture of survival, the weight of command, the peculiar pride of Canadian soldiers who proved themselves in the empire's darkest hour. For readers drawn to WWI, to Canadian history, or to accounts of ordinary men doing extraordinary things under impossible conditions.
