The Red Cross in Peace and War

This is the firsthand account of the woman who built the machinery of mercy. Clara Barton, already legendary for her work tending wounded soldiers during the Civil War, turned her relentless compassion into something lasting: an organization designed to respond to human suffering wherever it struck. Written in the aftermath of Barton's decades of service, this book traces the birth of the Red Cross from its European origins to its first American chapters, recounting the urgent work of relief during the Cuban campaign and beyond. Barton's voice is practical and unsentimental, more concerned with logistics and preparedness than with glory. She does not romanticize war or pretend that organized aid can erase its horrors. Instead, she argues for the radical necessity of being ready, of having systems in place before disaster strikes. This is not a memoir of one woman's heroism but a case for the power of preparation, cooperation, and the stubborn belief that suffering can be alleviated if someone is willing to organize against it. For readers interested in the origins of modern humanitarianism, the real history of the American Red Cross, or the quietly revolutionary life of Clara Barton, this book is essential.
