The Queer, the Quaint and the Quizzical: A Cabinet for the Curious

In an age before the internet satisfied our hunger for the strange, Frank H. Stauffer built this cabinet of wonders from the oddest corners of human history. Here are peculiar books with titles that sound invented (they were not), manuscripts so beautiful they drove collectors to obsession, customs so bizarre they defy explanation, and incidents so strange they seem drawn from fever dreams rather than the historical record. Stauffer was an antiquarian with an eye for the delightful and the peculiar in equal measure, and his collection reads like a Victorian gentleman's scrapbook of everything that made history worth remembering: not the battles and treaties, but the curious books bound in unusual materials, the festivals where towns burned effigies of their neighbors, the literary feuds that ended in public scandal. This is a book for anyone who suspects the past was stranger than we're taught, and far more fun.
