The Purpose of the Papacy

This early 20th-century defense of the Papacy captures a moment when Catholic intellectuals urgently argued for the Pope's unique role as guardian of religious truth. Vaughan writes with passionate conviction, positioning the Papacy as the answer to what he sees as chaos and division in Protestant Christianity. His argument draws on history, theology, and political reality to make the case that papal authority represents divine continuity - the "torch of truth" passed from Peter to Pius X. Whether you agree or not, this book reveals how educated Catholics once articulated their faith's claims to secular modernity. It's a fascinating historical artifact that shows how the Church justified its authority during a period of rapid social change.
