The Proof of the Pudding

At an Indiana country club, Nan Farley must choose between the men vying for her hand: her adoptive father Timothy's preferred candidates, or the one who actually makes her heart beat faster. Timothy Farley rescued Nan from a Wabash River flood as a child and has spent years guarding her like treasure, terrified that Billy Copeland his business partner's son will steal her away. But Billy has already proven his character: he destroyed his own wife's reputation to escape his marriage and pursue Nan. Now Fanny Copeland, the woman he discarded, has arrived in town, and the social season promises delicious reckoning. Meredith Nicholson crafts a sparkling comedy of manners where reputation is currency, love is strategic, and kindness is the ultimate form of rebellion. Nan isn't a passive prize to be won; she's a young woman who must navigate a world where men believe they know what's best for her, even as they reveal their own weaknesses. The Proof of the Pudding the title itself a wry commentary on proving one's worth tests not just romantic suitors but every character's capacity for generosity and truth. For readers who enjoy the social wit of early 20th-century fiction, this is a breezy tale of romance, reputation, and the quiet power of women who refuse to be managed.
