The Prime Minister

David Lloyd George rose from a modest Welsh village to lead Britain through the Great War, and no one wrote his story better than Harold Spender, who knew the man himself. This biography captures the fire and contradictions of a leader who fundamentally reshaped modern Britain: his people's budget laid the groundwork for the welfare state, his wartime coalition held a fractured nation together, and his relentless ambition made him enemies as readily as disciples. Spender writes not as a distant historian but as someone who moved in Lloyd George's circles, giving this portrait an intimacy unavailable to later biographers. We see the Welsh nonconformist upbringing that fueled his radical social conscience, the village boy who would negotiate with kings and presidents. Lloyd George remains one of the most complex figures in British political history, and this early biography, written while memory was fresh, offers an indispensable window into the man behind the legend.
