The Priest and the Acolyte

This infamous Victorian novella achieved notoriety less through literary merit than through its role in one of the most famous criminal trials in English history. Written by Oxford undergraduate John Francis Bloxam and published in the single 1894 issue of The Chameleon magazine, the story depicts a romantic and sexual relationship between an Anglican priest and his fourteen-year-old acolyte. When their affair is discovered, the two flee and enter into a suicide pact. The magazine's contents, including also Lord Alfred Douglas's poem 'Two Loves,' were later introduced as evidence during Oscar Wilde's 1895 trials, with Wilde wrongly accused of authoring Bloxam's work. As literature, the novella is slight, its prose purple and its psychological interiority thin. As a historical artifact, however, it offers a stark portrait of Victorian sexuality's subterranean networks, the crushing weight of religious hypocrisy, and the fatal extremes to which forbidden love could drive men before the wall of scandal collapsed. It endures not as great fiction but as a window into an era when desire lived in shadow and speaking its name could destroy everything.
