The Present State of Virginia

The Present State of Virginia, written by Hugh Jones and first published in 1724, is a historical account that provides a detailed overview of Virginia's inhabitants, including indigenous peoples, Europeans, and enslaved Africans. The book discusses their religions, customs, governance, and economies, while also offering geographical descriptions of the colony. Jones aims to address misconceptions about Virginia in England and advocates for the region's potential for improvement, particularly under the leadership of notable governors like Colonel Spotswood. This work is significant for its early insights into the social and economic conditions of Virginia in the 18th century.
