The Pre-Columbian Discovery of America by the Northmen: Illustrated by Translations from Icelandic Sagas

Five hundred years before Columbus sailed, Norse sailors stepped onto North American soil. This 1868 work gathers the Icelandic sagas that preserve these extraordinary voyages: Leif Erikson's landing in Vinland, the settlement attempts in Greenland, the frantic skirrings about a land of wild grapes and strange peoples. DeCosta translates the medieval accounts that had circulated for centuries in isolated manuscripts, presenting them not as quaint antiquarian curiosities but as evidence of a lost chapter in human migration. The narrative follows the familiar arc of Norse expansion westward - from Norway to Iceland, from Iceland to Greenland, from Greenland to the mysterious western shore - before collapse and forgetting. What emerges is both adventure narrative and counter-narrative: a reminder that the 'discovery' of America was never a single event, that history is fuller and stranger than the maps we inherit. For readers curious about what was lost when the Greenland colonies vanished, or how medieval people imagined the edge of the known world, these sagas offer something rare: the raw pulse of exploration told by those who made it.
