The Power of Faith: Exemplified in the Life and Writings of the Late Mrs. Isabella Graham.

This is not a saint's biography in the usual sense. It's something rawer, a 19th-century woman rendering her own life as proof that faith without works is dead. Isabella Graham, born in Scotland and carried by circumstance to Canada, watched her husband die, buried children, and built institutions of mercy anyway. The book gathers her letters and reflections not to polish her image but to show the machinery of grace: how prayer sustained her through financial ruin, how she organized aid for the poor when she had little herself, how she founded the Society for the Relief of the Poor and the Female Charitable Society. Her prose is plain, direct, sometimes astringent, she has no patience for sentimentality. What emerges is a portrait of faith as a practical discipline, as demanding as any profession. For readers curious about the origins of American philanthropy, or about how women built the social safety net before they had the vote, this is a foundational text. It is also, simply, a record of one woman refusing to be crushed by grief.
