The Postal System of the United States and the New York General Post Office

The United States postal system was one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in American history, and this early 20th-century account captures its remarkable evolution from colonial post riders to a national network serving millions. Jefferies focuses not just on the mechanical operations of mail delivery but on the human beings who made it possible: the clerks, carriers, and administrators whose labor transformed scattered settlements into a connected nation. The book particularly examines the New York General Post Office as a case study in scale and complexity, revealing how one city became the nerve center of American correspondence. Written when the postal system faced modernization pressures, the text advocates for recognizing the dignity of postal labor and the importance of public understanding of these essential services. For readers interested in American infrastructure, labor history, or the foundations of modern communication, this book offers a window into how the mail became the circulatory system of American life.
