The Poll for an Assistant Minister for the Parish of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich

This is a time capsule wrapped in bureaucracy. In the spring of 1845, the parish of St. Peter Mancroft in Norwich held a contested election for assistant minister, and someone meticulously recorded every vote. What survives is not a novel but something rarer: a民意调查 of 1840s English religious politics, frozen in amber. Two men competed for the position. Rev. Thomas Wilson had the backing of the Friends of the Established Church. Rev. Thomas Clowes represented the Dissenting Interest, a formidable force in Norfolk's dissenting tradition. Their contest wasn't merely ecclesiastical but reflected profound tensions between Anglican authority and nonconformist resistance. The poll book captures this cleavage, listing ratepayers across Norwich's streets, each casting a vote that determined not just a position but the parish's spiritual direction. For historians and genealogists, this document is a rare artifact. It preserves the names of real people, their addresses, their choices in a moment of local consequence. It reveals how ordinary people participated in religious governance, how faction and faith intertwined in Victorian England.
