The Poetical Works of Henry Kirk White: With a Memoir by Sir Harris Nicolas

Henry Kirke White was twenty-one years old when tuberculosis took him in 1806, leaving behind a small body of verse that has haunted readers for two centuries. This collection gathers the complete poems of the Nottingham butcher's son who taught himself Latin by candlelight, who traded his dreams of literary fame for his father's insistence on a career in law, and who found in the Church a calling he pursued with the same desperate intensity he brought to his verses. The poems here ooze with youthful ambition and melancholy, with sonnets to solitude and odes to nature that anticipate the Romantic movement by a few years. What makes this volume indispensable is the memoir by Sir Harris Nicolas, which traces White's brief arc from precocious child to consumptive young man, painting a portrait of talent strangled by circumstance. White never lived to see his verses in print; now readers can encounter the work of someone who burned so briefly and so bright that even Byron, decades later, would name him among the tragic losses to English poetry.
