The Pioneer Woodsman as He Is Related to Lumbering in the Northwest

Here is a voice from the timber: George Henry Warren actually swung the axe, slept in rough camps, and navigated trackless forests in an era when the great pines of the Northwest still stood. This is not a romanticized portrait of the lumberjack but something rarer - a worker's unvarnished account of what it took to bring down the giants that covered the continent's heartland. Warren begins in western New York, where he learns the trade of sourcing timber for manufacturing, then pushes westward into Wisconsin with a crew of woodsmen whose survival depends on each other. The narrative captures the sheer physical brutality of the work - the muscle, the frost, the计算出 danger of dropping a hundred-foot pine in controlled chaos - as well as the fellowship that formed among men who faced those dangers together. The book preserves a world that existed for only a few decades: the last great stands of old-growth timber, the methods that shaped the industry, and the rough culture of the men who harvested America's forests before the age of mechanization.
