The Pilgrims' First Christmas

They crossed an ocean to find freedom. What they found was a frozen wilderness, grief, and a continent of unknowns. But on that first Christmas in the New World, the Pilgrims chose something radical: gratitude. This is the story of Mary Chilton, the young woman who stepped ashore at Plymouth Rock, and the small band of believers who refused to let despair win. Through brutal cold, loss, and the crushing weight of building something from nothing, they gathered in the cramped Mayflower to celebrate the birth of Christ. They made garlands from whatever they could find. They shared what little they had. They prayed together. Josephine Pittman Scribner renders the textures of 1620 with loving care: the wood smoke, the sparse but precious feast, the way faith became both sustenance and defiance. This is not a story of grand beginnings but of small, stubborn acts of joy in the midst of hardship. It captures what it cost to plant the seeds of a nation, and the human warmth that made it possible.
