The Picture Gallery Exploredor, an Account of Various Ancient Customs and Manners: Interspersed with Anecdotes and Biographical Sketches of Eminent Persons

Two young sisters arrive at a remote old mansion expecting boredom, then their guardian unlocks a door to the picture gallery. What unfolds is something stranger and more wonderful than any ordinary lesson: the walls themselves become a portal to history. As the girls examine each painting, their guide weaves tales of London Bridge and its bloody past, Sir William Wallace and the Wars of Independence, ancient customs and the manners of vanished centuries. The frame is simple, even by early 19th-century standards, but there's real wit in the conceit, a kind of playfulness that remembers children are capable of far more than moral instruction. This is education as discovery, history told through the close looking that only art invites.
