The Pictorial Press: Its Origin and Progress

The impulse to picture the world is older than civilization itself. Mason Jackson's definitive 19th-century study traces this universal passion, from the cave paintings of pre-historic peoples to the revolutionary illustrated newspapers that transformed how ordinary people received news. This is a book about how images became journalism, and how seeing became knowing. Jackson examines the emergence of illustrated journalism in England, following the form from early news-books and woodcut broadsheets through the explosive growth of illustrated newspapers after the abolition of censorship bodies like the Star Chamber. He demonstrates that pictures speak a universal language requiring no teaching, a truth evident whether you're a child delighting in picture books before knowing letters or an Inuit treasuring a discarded illustrated newspaper despite understanding none of its words. The book reveals how visual storytelling revolutionized public access to news, democratizing information for everyday lives. Essential for anyone curious about media history, the evolution of visual communication, or the roots of modern journalism.
