The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest (vol. I, No. 6, November 1895)

A rare surviving issue of the short-lived but fiery periodical that dared to name itself after a slur. Published in November 1895, this volume gathers poems, essays, and satirical pieces from writers grappling with an uncomfortable truth: that the literary marketplace of their era demanded artists sell their soul for survival. The contributors range from sonneteers mourning the death of authentic expression to sharp-tongued critics dissecting the machinery of the literary syndicate, asking whether any art can remain uncorrupted when money mediates every transaction. The writing crackles with period-specific frustration, but its central tension between art and commerce feels startlingly contemporary. This is a artifact of late-Victorian bohemian rebellion, a glimpse into the artistic underground that mainstream literary history has largely forgotten. For readers fascinated by the origins of artistic protest, the birth of the avant-garde, or simply the forgotten voices that spoke truth to the culture industries of their day.
