The Philatelic Index: Being an Alphabetical List of the Principal Articles Contained in a Selection of Some of the Best Known Philatelic Magazines in the English Language Up to the End of 1904

The first great reference work of philately, compiled when stamp collecting was transforming from fashionable amusement into serious scholarly pursuit. Jex Long solved a problem that had haunted the philatelic community for years: decades of research, discoveries, and debates scattered across dozens of English-language magazines, with no way to find anything. He personally indexed thousands of articles, creating an alphabetical key to the thinking of the earliest stamp collectors, the men who had first grappled with forgeries, postal history, and the taxonomy of the world's postage stamps. This is not a book to read cover to cover; it is a time machine for researchers, a master key that unlocks the Victorian and Edwardian philatelic mind. For serious collectors, historians of the postal arts, or anyone fascinated by how hobbies become disciplines, this index reveals the intellectual foundations upon which modern philately was built.
