The Palmy Days of Nance Oldfield

Anne Oldfield went from sewing seams to stealing scenes in an England where theatre was the most dangerous game in town. Born into poverty after her father's death, she was discovered singing at a tavern, her voice winning over audiences before her face ever did. What followed was a ascent through the cutthroat world of Queen Anne's stage, where rivals plotted, patrons demanded, and a woman with talent could either become a legend or be discarded. Robins captures the sparkle and venom of early 18th-century English theatre: the gossip and gambling, the fashion and flesh, the packed playhouses where wit was weaponized and reputation was currency. This is not merely a biography but a window into an era when actors were still climbing out of moral suspicion and a woman like Oldfield had to be brilliant, cunning, and lucky in equal measure. For readers who savor the behind-the-scenes drama of artistic power, or who want to understand how modern celebrity was invented in the coffee houses and playhouses of Georgian London.
