The Outlaws of Cave-in-Rock

Cave-in-Rock was a natural fortress, a massive limestone hollow opening onto the Ohio River, and for decades it served as the most dangerous place in America. This is the authentic history of that legendary hideout and the men who made it infamous. Rothert, writing in the early 1900s when memory of these outlaws was still fresh, documented the real stories of highwaymen and river pirates who preyed on flatboat traffic and travelers along the Natchez Trace. The Harpes, John Duff, Samuel Mason, and dozens of others made Cave-in-Rock their headquarters, emerging from that dark cavern to rob, murder, and disappear back into the shadows. This is not romanticized frontier fiction. It is verified historical account, drawn from court records, newspaper reports, and firsthand testimony. For anyone fascinated by the real blood-soaked roots of American history, this book pulls back the curtain on a world where outlaws ruled the rivers and roads, and justice was slow, brutal, and often absent.
