The Ordeal

The year is 1914. Europe teeters on the edge of catastrophe, and for young Michel Dreher, the world is about to split in two: before the war and after. This intimate portrait of a generation caught in history's gears follows Michel as he navigates first love, familial duty, and the mounting dread of a conflict that seems inevitable even as everyone hopes it won't come. Berger writes with striking immediacy for a novel composed in wartime, capturing not the battles themselves but the terrible suspension before them the long letters, the uncertain engagements, the conversations about where one will be by Christmas. The prose has a cinematic quality, shifting between the intimate and the expansive as Michel realizes that his personal dramas are insignificant against the machinery of nations marching toward slaughter. What emerges is a bittersweet meditation on youth interrupted, on the way a single summer can contain both the last days of innocence and the first days of a transformed world.
