The Old Market-Cart

A tender portrait of childhood in the English countryside, circa 1870. Young Sally Reed and her brother Ben find wonder in the most humble of things: an abandoned market cart becomes a castle, a farmyard becomes a kingdom. At the heart of the story is Gill, the stoic farmer who becomes their unlikely teacher, sharing the secrets of seed and soil, of patience and observation. The children learn that the world is richer than they imagined, if only they know how to look. Griswold writes with a quiet certainty that modern readers have lost, that wisdom grows in gardens, that kindness is a crop that yields much and costs little. This is a book for anyone who has ever turned a stick into a sword, a pile of hay into a fortress. It's for readers who believe that the best stories are the simplest ones, and that from ordinary ground, extraordinary things can grow.
