The Old and the New Magic

Evans traces magic's remarkable transformation from ancient mystical practices entangled with religion and superstition to the sophisticated theatrical performances of the early 20th century stage. Through careful examination of notable magicians and their techniques, he illuminates how "old magic" - with its associations with the supernatural and esoteric - gradually gave way to "new magic" built on scientific principles, sleight of hand, and psychological manipulation. Dr. Paul Carus's introduction provides the intellectual framework, exploring magic's etymology and historical roots to demonstrate how ancient beliefs evolved into the tricks audiences recognized by 1906. The work functions both as a historical record of an art form's evolution and as a fascinating window into how turn-of-the-century intellectuals understood the relationship between mysticism and rational entertainment. For anyone curious about the hidden history behind stage magic, this book offers an engaging portrait of a craft in transition - the last moments before modern magic would fully embrace its identity as entertainment rather than esoteric practice.
