The Nootka Sound Controversy: A Dissertation

A forgotten diplomatic crisis that nearly sparked war between empires. William R. Manning's 1905 dissertation excavates the Nootka Sound Controversy, the late 18th-century dispute between Spain and Britain over control of a remote inlet on the Pacific Northwest Coast. What began as a clash between Spanish and English trading vessels over territorial claims evolved into a confrontation that threatened to draw Europe into another colonial war. Manning draws on extensive archival research to challenge simplistic narratives, revealing the misunderstandings, miscalculations, and imperial pride that turned a minor territorial squabble into an international crisis. The incident sits at the intersection of the fur trade boom launched by Captain Cook's voyages and the declining dominance of Spanish colonial power in the Pacific. This is diplomatic history at its most granular: a case study in how nations stumble toward conflict and, through careful negotiation, occasionally stumble back.
