The New York Times Current History, a Monthly Magazine: The European War, March 1915

In March 1915, the Great War was less than a year old, and the world was still grasping for meaning amid the slaughter. This New York Times monthly publication offers something precious and increasingly rare: contemporary American journalism capturing the conflict as it happened, before the histories were written and the legends calcified. The issue focuses on the Balkans, that volatile tinderbox where Ottoman collapse, Serbian nationalism, and great power maneuvering had laid the groundwork for global catastrophe. Here is Turkey's fragile neutrality, the mounting pressures on Serbia, the chaos in Constantinople as the Ottoman Empire searched for allies while Europe burned. You will find no neat retrospection here, no knowing references to 1918. Instead, there is the raw confusion of 1915, the journalists themselves struggling to narrate a war that defied comprehension. For anyone curious about how history looks from inside the fog, this is an invaluable time capsule of American reporting at the dawn of the modern age of warfare.
