The Negro as a Soldier

The Negro as a Soldier, published in 1895 by Christian A. Fleetwood, is a historical account that highlights the contributions of African American soldiers in various conflicts, particularly during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the American Civil War. Fleetwood, a former Sergeant-Major in the 4th U.S. Colored Troops, challenges prevailing racial notions by documenting the bravery and significant roles of Black soldiers, including their participation in critical battles like Fort Wagner. This work serves as a vital reminder of the sacrifices made by African Americans in military service and advocates for their recognition in American history.
