The Naughty Man; or, Sir Thomas Brown

In this mischievous poetical satire from the late 19th century, the elderly Sir Thomas Brown finds himself thrust back into the dizzying world of high society courtship, and the results are deliciously absurd. Bliss wields verse like a scalpel, dissecting the ridiculous pretensions of the upper classes with wit both sharp and tender. Through Brown's awkward attempts to secure a bride, we witness the desperate theater of marriage as commodity, the hollow rituals of courtship, and the way society reduces human connection to transaction. But beneath the satire lies something warmer: a sympathetic portrait of an old man navigating modernity's strange demands, reminded that love and dignity can coexist even in the most absurd circumstances. For readers who relish Victorian social comedy and verse that sparks with intelligence, this forgotten gem offers both laughter and illumination.
