The Nature of Animal Light

The natural world has always held one of its most astonishing secrets in the dark: creatures that carry their own light within them. This book, first published in the early twentieth century, stands as a pioneering exploration of bioluminescence, the phenomenon that transforms the ocean's depths and forest nights into canvases of living glow. E. Newton Harvey traces humanity's encounter with luminous life across centuries, from Aristotle's puzzled observations to Robert Boyle's experiments with glowing wood. He maps the intricate mechanisms by which certain fungi, marine organisms, and other species produce their ethereal illumination, revealing that much of this light originates not from bacterial infection but from the organisms themselves. The book weaves together biology, physics, and chemistry to explain how living things manufacture their own radiance. This is a book for anyone who has ever stared at a firefly or watched the sea shimmer with unseen light and wondered: how?
