The Mouse and the Christmas Cake

A diminutive mouse named Nib has grand ambitions in this delightfully mischievous Victorian tale. Spying a magnificent Christmas cake crowned with an image of Windsor Castle, she decides it is the perfect fortress for a home and begins exploring its sugary depths. But the festive celebrations are just beginning, and when a troop of children arrives eager for cake, they hear mysterious rustlings from within. What follows is a gentle comedy of errors: panic, laughter, and one very frightened mouse making her daring escape back to her unexpected hideaway. Written in the lilting verse of late 19th-century children's literature, this story captures the pure, mischievous joy of small creatures in big worlds. The ending offers the kind of warm satisfaction readers have returned to for generations: the children resume their festivities, and Nib returns victorious to her cake-filled kingdom. Perfect for reading aloud on Christmas Eve or any time a little innocent mischief is needed.
