The Mother's Nursery Songs

Long before playlists and screens, American mothers sang their children to sleep. Thomas Hastings' 1834 collection preserves those whispered melodies - lullabies that hushed fussy infants, nursery songs that taught colors and creatures, and simple tunes meant to plant the first seeds of musical love in young hearts. These are not sophisticated compositions; they are something rarer: the actual songs mothers in early 19th century America sang in their parlors and by their children's bedsides. The book includes prompts for discussion, gentle moral verses about kindness and gratitude, and lyrics celebrating birds, flowers, and the domestic circle. What makes this volume remarkable is its intimacy - it was designed not for concert halls but for the sacred ordinary of a mother holding her child. For anyone curious about how Americans once raised their little ones, or for those who simply want to hear the echoes of 1834, these are the songs that soothed a nation before modernity swept them away.
