The Most Extraordinary Trial of William Palmer, for the Rugeley Poisonings, Which Lasted Twelve Days
1857
The trial of William Palmer was one of the most sensational criminal proceedings in Victorian England. A young surgeon from Rugeley, Palmer stood accused of murdering his friend and betting partner John Parsons Cook by poisoning him with strychnine. The case gripped the nation, not merely because of the alleged crime's gruesome nature, but because of who Palmer was: a man of medicine, a gentleman, someone who moved in respectable society. That such a man might systematically murder for financial gain seemed to reveal something terrifying about the promises of modern professional life. The trial lasted twelve days. The evidence was largely circumstantial, the medical testimony contradictory, and the courtroom packed daily with spectators hungry for every revelation of Palmer's financial desperation, his mounting debts, his gambling losses, his troubled marriage. The prosecution argued he had every motive: Cook owed him money, and his death would cancel the debt while collecting substantial winnings from a race their shared horse had won. The defense countered that Cook had been ill for months, that Palmer was simply unlucky in love and cards, a victim of Circumstance rather than design. This contemporary account captures the extraordinary drama of that trial, its medical intricacies, its courtroom theater, and what it revealed about the dark underside of mid-Victorian England.
