The Mornin'-Glory Girl

The Mornin'-Glory Girl captures the irrepressible spirit of Betty Wopp, a foster child raised by the warm, chaotic Wopp family in rural America. Her world overflows with morning glories climbing the farmhouse, her brothers' endless mischief, and the arrival of a new schoolteacher who threatens to upend her unpredictable life. Alice M. Winlow transforms ordinary days into genuine adventures, from chaotic mealtimes to the quiet drama of a child navigating her place in a bustling household. The Wopp family springs vividly from the page: Ebenezer, whose forgetful good nature leaves trails of minor disasters in his wake, and his wife, whose generous boisterousness holds everything together. Betty herself is a revelation, full of curiosity and spark, more interested in the world beyond the fence than in the lessons of the schoolroom. The novel offers a window into early twentieth-century rural life, where community and family bind people together, and where a young girl's dreams matter as much as the flowers she tends. It endures for readers who crave gentle, humorous stories about finding belonging and joy in simple things.
