The Mirror of Taste, and Dramatic Censor, Vol. I, No. 5, May 1810

This May 1810 issue of The Mirror of Taste and Dramatic Censor performs an act of literary archaeology, resurrecting the legacy of Menander, the Athenian playwright whom antiquity called the supreme master of New Comedy. The anonymous critic mourns what time has taken from us: nearly a thousand plays, reduced to fragments and quotations. Where Aristophanes burst with slapstick and political fury, Menander offered something radical for his era refined dialogue, psychologically acute characters, comedy that didn't need crude spectacle to land its blows. The essay traces his transformation of comic drama while lamenting the vast losses to his corpus, and meditates on the peculiar fate of an artist celebrated abroad yet dismissed in his own Athens.
