The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Volume 19, No. 553, June 23, 1832

In the summer of 1832, a curious reader in England could purchase this slender volume for a few pence and find themselves transported from the crumbling ruins of Dunheved Castle to the lonely exile of Napoleon on the island of St. Helena. This was the magic of The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction: a weekly window into history, culture, and the fading medieval world. The volume opens with a meditation on Dunheved, a fortress now falling into romantic ruin, prompting reflections on an age of conflict that gave way to the quieter decades of the 1830s. Other pages recall the recently deceased Mr. Colton, dish out anecdotes about the deposed Emperor sharpening his wit on that remote Atlantic rock, and catalog the strange pastimes that shaped different societies. Here is 1832 in all its particulars: the last tremors of the Napoleonic era still felt, medieval stones crumbling into tourist attractions, and a reading public hungry for both education and entertainment. For anyone drawn to primary sources, this is a genuine artifact of the pre-Victorian moment.
