The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Volume 13 — Index to Volume 13

This is a time capsule of early 19th century English intellectual life, a periodical designed to edify and entertain the Georgian reader. Volume 13 offers essays on everything from the chemistry of the day (including a substantial memoir of Sir Humphry Davy, the era's most celebrated scientist) to poetry, topographical sketches, and biographical portraits of notable figures. Here you will find the concerns of 1829: Romantic-era wonder at natural philosophy, pride in British scientific achievement, and the gentle moral instruction that characterized popular reading of the period. For readers curious about what educated English people consumed before Victoria ascended the throne, this eclectic mix serves as a vivid, idiosyncratic window. It is not a novel with a single argument but a newspaper of curiosities, each page offering something different: a passage of verse, an anecdote about a discoverer, a description of a foreign land.
