The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Volume 12, No. 336, October 18, 1828

Step into the reading room of 1828. This October issue of The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction delivers exactly what its title promises: a rich cabinet of wonders for the curious mind. Here, you'll wander through illustrated articles on Richmond Palace, the vanished Tudor gem where Wolsey entertained Henry VIII and Elizabeth I held court, its corridors now exist only in engravings like these. Sir Isaac Newton explains the mysteries of comets to curious readers. Poetry reflects on the customs and events of the day. The effect is intimate and transporting, like holding a single week of someone's reading life from two centuries ago. This isn't literature as we know it; it's a time capsule of what educated Britons found worthy of ink and attention. For readers who love the texture of history, thehum of old print, or simply want to understand what people read before novels conquered everything, this is a small, perfect artifact.
