The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Volume 12, No. 332, September 20, 1828

This is a window into September 1828, when British readers would have found this slim periodical on their drawing room tables and read it aloud by candlelight. The Mirror of Literature was one of the era's most popular weekly magazines, a mashup of entertainment and edification that served up poetry, essays, cultural commentary, and short fiction to an eager middle-class audience. This particular issue opens with literary chat about Shakespeare, wanders through a visit to Anne Hathaway's cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon, and includes a wonderfully strange tale by Goethe about a famous opera singer whose ghost returns to haunt the living. There are poems, anecdotes about French dueling customs, superstitions about bees, and whatever caught the editor's fancy that week. It's a literary time capsule: not a novel with a plot, but a vivid snapshot of what educated English speakers were thinking and reading nearly two centuries ago. If you've ever wondered what populated the imagination of the Regency era between the big-name novels, this is your answer.
