The Mind of the Artist: Thoughts and Sayings of Painters and Sculptors on Their Art

What does it feel like to stand before a canvas and try to capture what you see? What secrets do artists carry about the struggle between vision and execution, between nature and invention? This early 20th-century anthology gathers the voices of painters and sculptors across centuries who attempted to articulate what most of us can only sense when we stand in front of a great painting. Here, Leonardo da Vinci reflects on the artist's relationship to nature, Michelangelo reveals the secret of finding the figure already trapped in the marble, and Fuseli ponders the boundaries of imagination. George Clausen's preface sets a meditative tone, but the real substance lies in the artists' own words: raw, sometimes contradictory, always passionate attempts to explain the inexplicable. Why has this collection endured for nearly a century? Because the questions it asks are the same questions we still ask ourselves in galleries and studios: What is truth in art? How do we translate seeing into making? What separates imitation from creation? This is a book for anyone who has stood before a painting and wondered what the artist was thinking.
