The Mayflower, January, 1905

January 1905. A horticultural journal dedicated almost entirely to the aster, that blousy late-summer bloom beloved by Edwardian gardeners. This isn't a modern plant care article slick with SEO keywords - it's something rarer: a window into gardening as it was practiced when growing flowers was both art and necessity, before global supply chains and industrial agriculture. The issue opens with a editorial overview tracing the aster's history and cultural rise, then moves through practical instruction on soil preparation, pest management, watering schedules, and which varieties to cultivate. Interspersed throughout are poems, subscription notices, and the small domestic details that make old periodicals feel so intimate. The advice is specific to a specific place and time - the tools available, the chemicals permitted, the soil conditions of a century ago. For modern gardeners, it's a curiosity. For historians of horticulture, it's a small treasure. For anyone who loves the idea of curling up with practical wisdom written in a more leisurely age, it's an invitation to slow down and think about dirt.
