The Maryland Line in the Confederate States Army.

Written just four years after Lee's surrender, this is a veteran Confederate officer's firsthand account of the Maryland troops who chose to fight for the South despite their state remaining in the Union. W.W. Goldsborough documents the formation of the First Maryland Infantry and the Maryland Line, following their journey from the tensions of Baltimore in April 1861 through their early battles and campaigns. The book captures the arguments and convictions that led these men to risk everything for the Confederate cause, the bonds formed in training and battle, and thepride they took in their service. This is not neutral history but a participant's memoir, preserving the perspectives and memories of men who fought in a cause now lost. For Civil War historians and anyone interested in the complex loyalties of border states, it offers an invaluable primary source: the voice of someone who was there, telling the story of soldiers who crossed lines both physical and ideological to take up arms alongside their Southern neighbors.
