The Magnificent Montez: From Courtesan to Convert

She was the most notorious woman in Europe. Born Eliza Rosanna Gilbert in Limerick to uncertain parentage, she reinvented herself as Lola Montez, a Spanish dancer with eyes like daggers and a reputation to match. What followed was a spectacular descent through the drawing rooms of London, the casinos of Paris, and the courts of Bavaria where she brought a king to his knees. Horace Wyndham chronicles her meteoric rise from stage dancer to royal paramour, her entanglement with King Ludwig I that sparked a constitutional crisis, her exile from Bavaria, and her eventual transformation into Catholic philanthropist. But beneath the glittering surface lies something darker: a woman grasping for respectability in a world that would only ever see her as a courtesan. This is scandal sheet and tragedy both, told with Victorian relish for transgression. For readers who love history's fallen women, who want to understand how reputation is constructed and destroyed, this remains compulsively readable. We are still, it turns out, fascinated by women who break the rules and pay the price.
