The Loyalists of Massachusetts and the Other Side of the American Revolution

Most Americans know the Revolution as a story of heroes and tyrants, patriots and redcoats. But what of the thousands who remained loyal to the Crown? Stark resurrects the forgotten voices of Massachusetts Loyalists, men and women who watched their world crumble as independence swept through New England. This early 20th-century work recovers what standard textbooks erased: the genuine fears, reasoned arguments, and deep attachments to British governance that led otherwise decent people to resist the revolutionary tide. Stark examines the social fabric of colonial Massachusetts, revealing how family ties, economic interests, and simple inertia bound certain citizens to the Crown. He documents their persecution, the confiscation of their property, their exile to Nova Scotia and England, and the deliberate erasure of their stories from national memory. Written with evident sympathy but not hagiography, this work asks uncomfortable questions about which histories get told and why.
