The Lost Parchment: A Detective Story

This 1914 detective novel transports readers to an English village where wealth, secrets, and wounded pride collide. Rupert Hendle, a wealthy squire, and his sharply cynical friend Dean Carrington navigate the treacherous waters of social obligation and family inheritance. When a mysterious parchment goes missing, the stakes become clear: an inheritance worth fighting for, and secrets someone would kill to keep buried. Hume, whose earlier success "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab" made him a pioneer of the genre, crafts a period piece that captures the intimate cruelty of provincial English society. The mystery itself is pleasingly tangled, with suspects piling up as the truth recedes. This isn't Doyle's grand theatrical crime; it's smaller, meaner, more claustrophobic. For readers who enjoy their detective fiction with a side of social satire and period atmosphere.
