The Lost Land of King Arthur

The land remembers what history cannot confirm. John Cuming Walters takes readers on a pilgrimage through Cornwall and the West Country, tracing the physical places that anchor the Arthurian legend: the imagined kingdom of Cameliard, the lost land of Lyonnesse beneath the waves, the hills where battles were fought and druidic stones still stand. Published in 1909, this work sits at the crossroads of antiquarian scholarship and romantic wonder, seeking the "lost land" not through medieval texts but through the landscape itself. Walters acknowledges the scarcity of hard historical evidence yet argues that Arthur's significance persists in the localities and traditions that claim him. The book functions as both geographical guide and meditation on how legends take root: why do certain places become vessels for certain stories? For readers who have ever stood on a Cornish cliff and felt the pull of something older than memory, this remains a strange and quietly passionate companion.
