The Little Gods: A Masque of the Far East

Set against the twilight of the British Empire, this luminous early 20th-century novel follows Western travelers and seekers who drift eastward in search of something their own civilization cannot provide. Through a cast of pilgrims, diplomats, mystics, and fallen aristocrats, Thomas constructs a sprawling meditation on what it means to inhabit a world that feels increasingly like a stage upon which unseen forces play their games. The Far East here is neither paradise nor enigma, but a mirror in which the West confronts its own hunger for meaning beyond the material. The prose moves with a dreamlike precision, alternating between sardonic wit and genuine spiritual yearning. Thomas understands that the collision between East and West is not merely political, but deeply personal: every character carries their own private mythology, their own small gods. The result is a book that feels both of its time and strangely eternal, capturing a moment when the old world orders were dying and something new and uncertain was being born.
