The Little Gleaner, Vol. X: A Monthly Magazine for the Young

In the winter of 1854, Victorian children turned the pages of The Little Gleaner to find stories where death came gently, prayers were answered, and every moral choice carried the weight of eternity. This tenth volume opens with the editor's New Year's address, urging young readers to examine their souls and consider their relationship with God as another year unfolds. The centerpiece is a devastating little story about Annie, a girl whose accident leads to her poignant final moments spent singing a hymn, her brief life rendered with the sentimental tenderness that defined Victorian children's literature. Around her tale, other narratives unfold: lessons on obedience to parents, acts of self-denial, and the quiet triumphs of faith over doubt. Poetry fills the gaps, each verse designed to implant virtue alongside beauty. This is not a book for the modern child, but for readers curious about how previous generations taught goodness to their young through story, song, and the gentle solemnity of 19th-century piety.
