The Lilac Lady

Six orphaned sisters face an uncertain future until the Campbells of Martindale offer them something that feels like hope. The Greenfield sisters-Pearl, Patience, Peace, Pleasant, Patience (again?), and the youngest Pruit-leave behind everything they know, carrying only their battered trunk and each other. Ruth Brown MacArthur captures that precise moment of childhood when leaving behind the familiar feels both terrifying and electric with possibility. The sisters arrive at their new home curious and watchful, each navigating the transition in her own way, with Peace leading the charge as the irrepressibly mischievous soul who speaks her mind regardless of consequence. What unfolds is a gentle story of found family, of strangers who become guardians, of learning to trust when loss has taught you only abandonment. The Lilac Lady, the mysterious neighbor who appears in the narrative's periphery, promises additional mystery to this tender tale of six girls rebuilding their lives. Written in 1914, this is historical children's fiction that understands how children actually feel: that wild mixture of excitement, grief, and fierce loyalty to siblings who are the only constants in a shifting world.
